Manenberg Rangers kept their promotion ambitions alive with a hard-fought 26-22 bonus point victory against visitors Young Wesley’s, in a WPRFU City League Top 9 clash, at the Ohio Road sportsfield, at the weekend. Although first to put points on the board, the home side went into the break trailing 19-14.
“We were well prepared and knew exactly that our opponents is coming to win,” said Rangers chairman, Saaid Blake.
“We were a bit complacent and things did not go well for us in the first quarter of the game. We had to be on our guard for every quick penalty,” he said.
“Our team got the second half going with sublime handling and running rugby with the rain pelting down,” he said.
Young Wesley’s coach Peter Andries complimented the condition of the field, despite the weekend’s heavy downpour, saying his side always enjoy playing Rangers and always expect a tough match.
“We lost the game; our first game in the top 9. We need to go back to the drawing board and come out full guns blazing for our next game,” he said.
“I’m proud of them and I said to them after the game it is not always moonlight and roses. We need to go fix things on the practice field this week,” he said.
“Well done to Rangers; in the end they pulled through. It’s always ‘lekker’ to play against them and always a big game,” he said.
The Philippi-based side will face Retreat Titans this week while Rangers travel to Strand.
