The youngest player on the field hit the winning runs for Falcons Softball Club on January 18.
Kenwyn Primary School’s Hannah Manuel, 13, from Mitchell’s Plain helped Falcons to edge off a 10-9 win against Silvertree Titans Baseball and Softball Club in a Cape Town Softball Association’s Second Division match, at Turfhall sports complex, on Saturday.
It was the first match of the return of the Second Division since the December holidays, with a majority of the players shaking off the nerves on the diamond.
The game was a competitive showdown from start to finish, with Falcons gaining an early edge in the first two frames as Titans struggled to contain their hitting and base-running momentum.
Titans’ Veronica Theunissen said they have a wealth of experience and young players hungry to showcase their skill for the club.
“We are a very competitive team with a lot of experience. We have a mix of young girls in the team. We we play very hard. The performance was very good. The first frame or two we got into our own heads. We lacked a bit of confidence. It was the first game of the second part of the season. We fought back and scored six runs in the last frame,” she said.
With the game finished a point in favor of Falcons, Silvertree Titans will look to bounce back to winning ways when they tackle Tantasport at 2pm, at Turfhall, on Saturday, January 25.
The Falcons’ second division team is set to face Tornados at 3.30pm on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Falcons’ Major League side, who were on a bye this past weekend, will return to action against Glenthorn A’s at 6pm on Field A on Saturday.
