Stunning views and Cape Town’s perfect weather served as a stunning backdrop at the weekend as one of the most iconic races on the city’s running calendar took place.
The Bay-to-Bay race, hosted by Top Form Athletics Club, has become a beloved event for local runners and offers a unique challenge with its scenic route.
Starting in Camps Bay, the 30km race takes runners along the coastline to Hout Bay and back to its starting point, while the 15km race kicks off in Hout Bay and ends in Camps Bay.
This year’s event was particularly special for Top Form, as they welcomed the celebrated Gerda Steyn, the darling of South African road running, to their race.
Steyn, a three-time Comrades Marathon winner and five-time Two Oceans Ultra Marathon champion, was a star attraction, and her participation made the event all the more exciting.
With her focused journey toward the upcoming Two Oceans Marathon, Steyn was eager to add the Bay-to-Bay race to her preparation.
“It’s a pleasure to be in Cape Town, and I love the weather,” said Steyn.
“Bay-to-Bay is where it all begins as I build up for my ultra marathons. I’m starting my preparation here and I’m fully focused on the year ahead. It’s going to be a great one.”
Steyn joined the Top Form Athletics Club the day before the race for a shakeout run, an opportunity for runners to connect with the champion while preparing for the race.
Top Form coordinator Nabeelah Davids was thrilled to have Steyn grace the event, calling it a historic moment for both the club and the race.
“Gerda is a darling of SA running and having her at one of the most iconic races on the Cape Town running calendar is iconic itself,” said Davids.
“Her participation only solidifies our race’s place in the city’s running calendar. We’re also a community-based club and this event is about bringing people together to share the sense of community.”
Race day saw Steyn put up a stellar performance, finishing second in the women’s category, 56 seconds behind winner, Lucy Reid.
The men’s race was just as thrilling, with Langa’s Raydon Baile crossing the finish line first, followed closely by Sibusiso Madikizela and Sithembiso Mqhele.
