Despite allegations from service providers that Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is on the brink of liquidation, the company has announced its readiness to welcome the influx of travellers across all of the main airports.

The company has said that from the start of the peak travel period in October 2024 to the end of March 2025, it has rolled out extensive preparations to ensure passengers enjoy a seamless journey.

ACSA has been gearing up for this high-demand period for months. “We are looking forward to welcoming passengers at our airports this festive season,” says ACSA CEO Ms. Mpumi Mpofu.

“The last year has been marked by incredible gains for the company, and we are now well-positioned to ensure that the influx of travellers flows smoothly through our terminals.”

O.R. Tambo International Airport

At O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), the peak is forecasted between 13 and 19 December 2024, with 13 December expected to be the busiest day, with 598 aircraft movements and 67,179 passengers.

Cape Town International Airport

Meanwhile, Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) anticipates its peak week from 16 to 22 December, culminating in 22 December’s 260 aircraft movements and 36,272 passengers.

King Shaka International Airport

King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) expects its highest traffic on 16 December, with 19,407 passengers and 125 aircraft movements.

To manage the high volume of passengers, ACSA has collaborated with key stakeholders, including the South African Police Service, Border Management Authority, and other state agencies.

The focus has been on bolstering staffing, optimising critical services, and improving passenger flows.

The increased use of e-Gates will ensure faster processing, streamlined queues at emigration points, and reliable baggage handling systems.

Fuel forecasting and throughput improvements at depots will ensure uninterrupted aircraft operations.
